Wow! We have an unusual number of Goldfinches and House Finches on the feeders
this morning so thought I'd check to see if the Common Redpolls came back. Had
3 the other day. To my surprise there was a single Hoary Redpoll on the
Thistle sock feeder. Not only is that an FOY, it is a first for the yard and
best of all a sure LIFER for me. (Years ago I saw one at the side of the road,
but didn't count it because I couldn't get it into the binocs before it flew
away.) Of course, it is a first for my Mitchell County List.

Not too bad for corn and bean field habitat, 7 miles SW of Riceville, 9 miles
NE of Elma, and 14 miles E of Osage.

Like the Common Redpolls though, it probably won't come back.
