The Iowa City Bird Club had an outing to the QC today Feb. 24th
Highlights: 10-15 Red Crossbills in the hemlocks at the Fairmont Cemetery entrance on Rockingham Rd. Carolina Wren, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Pine Siskins, Eurasian Tree Sparrows and an imm. Red-shouldered Hawk near the back entrance to the cemetery Pileated Woodpecker and Gadwall at Credit Island A near adult Kumlien’s Iceland Gull was below L&D 15 in Davenport, based on a dark smudge seen on the bill. Interestingly this bird had a dark iris. Waterfowl seen from the Butterworth Parkway in Moline included: Mallard, Canvasback, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Common and Hooded Merganser 3 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls at the south end of Campbell’s Island, viewed from the end of the Beacon Harbor Parkway in East Moline above L&D 14 on Illinois side: 1 adult Lesser Blk-backed Gull 1st and 2nd cycle Kumlien’s Iceland Gulls 1st cycle and 3rd cycle Thayer’s Gulls 1st cycle Glaucous Gull and another bird that was a good candidate for a 2nd or 3rd cycle Nelson’s Gull(Herring x Glaucous) from Shuler’s Shady Grove Park in Rapids City, IL: 1 adult Lesser Blk-backed Gull approx. 6 Trumpeter Swans 1 female Long-tailed Duck Chris Caster Coralville --- Please contribute your sightings to our list; it is only as good as members make it! --- Birding channel recommendation for FRS/GMRS radio use: Primary selection; channel 5/0 , alternate selection; channel 6/0 --- This mailing list is sponsored by the Iowa Ornithologists' Union.
