Bill Scheible and I spent the afternoon today at Cone Marsh in Louisa County.
We saw a Loggerhead Shrike just north of the intersection of 220th Street and
T Ave. Then about 2 miles west on 220th Street we saw a Northern Shrike. We
heard Sandhill Cranes in several locations and we saw 3 cranes quite well along
220th Street. Eurasian Tree Sparrows were in their normal location at the house
by the intersection of 220th Street and V Ave. We also found a large flock of
Lapland Longspurs along 220th Street. Bill thought it might be 100 birds and I
thought it might be 200. The Great Horned Owl was on the nest in Lone Tree and
we saw one owlet nestled up next to her. We tallied 14 species of waterfowl
altogether. Although it was cold and blustery we really enjoyed the sights and
sounds of Spring migration. Linda RudolphCoralville
