I spent yesterday and today in northeastern Iowa, where the weather and birds
reminded me more of winter than spring. Highlights yesterday included 14
Rough-legged Hawks, 2 Sandhill Cranes in Chickasaw Co., 6 Northern Shrikes, a
total of 96 Common Redpolls scattered in small flocks, and a female Hoary
Redpoll in eastern Howard Co. Today Billy Reiter-Marolf and I toured mostly
frozen Pool 9 by airboat (surveying Bald Eagles) and found a nice variety of
waterfowl including 200+ Tundra Swans plus 18 Sandhill Cranes. On my way home I
found another Northern Shrike and two more small flocks of Common Redpolls.
