Birding Cone Marsh this afternoon we were delighted to find 13 white-faced ibis, which we nearly missed. A single ibis flew over the road just 20 feet in front of our vehicle, causing our jaws to drop. It circled around and joined a dozen others that were feeding alongside 100 or so Yellowlegs on the north side of 220th St. I was able to creep in close for great photos. The ibis was a life bird for us.
Other birds of note: Juvenile Bald Eagle (3 hanging out together) Northern Harrier (1) Sandhill Cranes (4 on a fly-by) Brown Thrasher (1 singing its heart out) Meadowlark (1) Yellow-rumpled Warbler (1) Peregrine Falcon (1 stunning specimen gleaming in the late afternoon sun) Michele Francis Marion --- Please contribute your sightings to our list; it is only as good as members make it! --- Birding channel recommendation for FRS/GMRS radio use: Primary selection; channel 5/0 , alternate selection; channel 6/0 --- This mailing list is sponsored by the Iowa Ornithologists' Union.
