I was encouraged to see 2 red-headed woodpeckers flying south alongside us
on Hwy 69 Wednesday morning, about 7:25. We were in the midst of a
construction zone, so their speed was the same as ours-30mph. Our location
was about 8 miles north of Ames, between the Gilbert and Story City corners.

We are enjoying the return of our Baltimore (aka Northern?) orioles. I saw
3 at our feeders this morning. They seem to be attracted to the hummingbird
water and oranges more than the jelly. (The house finches are enjoying the
jelly and oranges, too.) Just recently, we located the oriole's nest from
last summer, high in a maple tree outside our windows. There was no way we
could find it when it was active with all the leaves, but it was obvious
this spring on the bare branches.
Rejoicing, Sue
