Paul Skrade, Kevin Murphy, and I did a Big Day yesterday (13 May) in central Iowa. We managed to tally 181 species despite warm temperatures and breezy conditions in the afternoon. Some highlights included 21 waterfowl species (Common Goldeneye and Common and Red-breasted mergansers were good finds), a subadult Neotropic Cormorant at Jester Park, 2 American Bitterns, 8 White-faced Ibis (Dunbar Sl.), a Peregrine Falcon, 24 species of shorebirds (4 Ruddy Turnstones at Saylorville were the best find; also American Avocets at 2 locales and Hudsonian Godwits at several stops), 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches, 20 warbler species including a male Cape May at Ledges SP, and lingering Purple Finches and Pine Siskins. Notable misses included Hooded Merganser, Green Heron, N. Harrier, Blue-headed Vireo, Cedar Waxwing, and both tanagers.
