This morning there was a singing male HOODED WARBLER on the Basswood Trail at Neal Smith NWR. I got nice looks at him. The trail is along 112th Ave. It is a mown grass trail, but due to the rain it has not been mowed recently and is a little muddy in places, but still passable. Also at Basswood was an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER. Another ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and a WOOD THRUSH were along the Savanna Trail. An ALDER FLYCATCHER, many WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, a pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES and 3 BELL'S VIREOS were along the Tallgrass Trail. Several RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen around the refuge.
Of course, there are plenty of HENSLOW'S SPARROWS, DICKCISSELS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, BOBOLINKS, EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, and other grassland birds around the refuge. -- Karen Viste-Sparkman Wildlife Biologist Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge P.O.
