While birding in northern Story County, near Bjorkboda Marsh, this noon, I
noticed a large flock (70+) Purple Martins very high and gradually—but very
definitely—migrating southward. Wetlands in the area all are dry, or nearly
so, from the “flash drought” conditions in central Iowa, so nothing was seen
for shorebirds except a few Killdeer and a couple of Spotted Sandpipers. I did
encounter several Red-headed Woodpeckers today, including (unfortunately) one
recently car-killed on a county blacktop.
