My wife and I just returned from biking the new stretch of the Raccoon Valley
Bike Trail between Perry & Minburn this afternoon. Along the trail about a
mile south of Perry a female Northern Bobwhite flushed from the trail edge, and
about 3/4 mi further south we passed a singing male in the trailside brush. On
returning 30 minutes later he was still busily singing away. I’ve heard a few
other quail in both Dallas and Guthrie counties this summer—more than I’ve
heard there in the past few years. I hope that’s a good sign for the quail,
but it will be interesting to see what numbers DNR’s August roadside surveys
(in progress) might turn up for those counties, and for all of southern Iowa.
