I spent a couple of hours at Holst State Forest (Boone Co., near Fraser) today, but didn’t find very much bird activity in the high heat. I did find several Black & White Warblers (which seem to be in full migration now) and a couple of high canopy warblers I just couldn’t get any clear looks at. Best bird of the day was probably Black-billed Cuckoo, which was making its “whimpering” call from some distance away, but no doubt about the ID. Although I’ve found a number of Yellow-billed cuckoos in recent weeks, this was actually a FOY Black-billed for me.
