This morning I enjoyed close scoping of waterfowl at Goose Lake
in North Liberty and was particularly interested in a pair of
American Black Ducks. A juv. male LONG-TAILED DUCK was a big
surprise when it popped up in my scope's view! The duck's color, or
lack of, matched the gray water and its low profile made it easy
to miss. Also it was the diving-est duck there.
The lake is just north of Casey's (off I-380) and between Nick Dr.
and 240th St. Access points are west end, east end and north side.
Scales Pointe didn't have a single water bird today and only a
handful of gulls but Hawkeye's refuge still has a few thousand ducks.
Also seen today were an adult Rufous-morph Red-tailed Hawk along
James Ave. and one Fox Sparrow.
