Hi All, Reid and I couldn't resist the invitation implied in Keith Dyche's e-mail to the listserve yesterday to come and see the 60,000 Snow and Ross' Geese at Rapp Park in Shenandoah, so we headed that direction this morning. Fortunately we had to take a detour on a road through Montgomery County before we entered Page County and ultimately Rapp Park. We noticed a large group of Snow Geese in a field on the south side of Hwy. H46, 1/4 mile east of "O" Avenue and pulled off into a farm field driveway to look at the group. Suddenly the sky was filled with thousands of snows and ross' geese, with plenty of blue phase Snow Geese mixed in, along with a small scattering of Greater White-fronted Geese and Cackling Geese (less than 12 each of the last two species mentioned). Anyway, a rough estimate was at least 20-30,000 Snow Geese and approximately 40-100 Ross' Geese (we did not find the blue phase Ross' Goose in this flock which Keith had mentioned seeing at Rapp Park yesterday). We did go on to Rapp Park where there was only 1 Ross' Goose present and no Snow Geese. It is an amazing sight to see this many birds in one location getting up and flying about and then re-landing only to alight again and start all over. Good Birding!
