If I hadn't studied up on the GBBG, I may have missed important field marks of
the BF Kittiwake seen last week. Wing tip patterns seem to be important for
identification, as with head patterns on turtles.
If you find yourself in a foggy wooded river bottom this time of year and hear
a "whoop" like a boy would make, consider raccoon. I'm not sure what the back
yard starlings are trying to say but a few languages that I can discern are
robin, RT hawk, and flicker. Years ago around here it was largely upland
sandpiper. And they occasionally do a "whoop".
