Hello I-Birders,
Karen and I birded around the east side of Saylorville Reservoir this morning. At the entrance to Cherry Glen Picnic Area we found a large, active mixed flock, perhaps brought down by this morning's early thunderstorm. The group included WILSON'S, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, NASHVILLE, BLACK AND WHITE, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, FOS WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, RED-EYED and BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER among the regulars. At the Cherry Glen boat ramp parking lot were about 1000 FRANKLIN'S GULLS. We tried hard to sift a Sabine's out of the lot, without luck. Oak Grove Picnic Area was pretty quiet, though we did pick up a juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, giving us a six woodpecker day. At the Oak Grove beach were two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, accompanied by a single RUDDY TURNSTONE. The recent mosquito menace in our area was, happily, not noticed. Overall, quite a nice birding morning. Good Birding, Stuart Sparkman NW Des Moines --- This mailing list is sponsored by the Iowa Ornithologists' Union.
