GIVE CONSERVATION WINGS

SHOW UP.... SPEAK UP.... ANTE UP....
FOR BIRDS, FOR NATURAL HABITATS, FOR ALL BIODIVERSITY

1. Birding Festivals held at National Wildlife Refuges are shown at the following link.

2. Scroll further to see what percentages of popular National Wildlife Refuges of those offering birding festivals were preserved perpetually by purchase of the annual Bird/Duck Stamps, available at nearly all Post Offices.

USFWS has put together a great page that catalogs birding festivals throughout the year, at Refuges across the country, from the Festival of the Cranes at Wheeler NWR (Alabama) in January to the Assateague Island Waterfowl Weekend at Chincoteague NWR (Virginia) in December: http://www.fws.gov/refuges/birding/GreatBirdFests2015.html

Here is another list... I did a little searching, to see how many of the NWRs having birding festivals had been acquired through Stamp/MBCF dollars, using 35% as my minimum-threshold cutoff. Here's what I came up with:

Hamden Slough NWR (MN) 100%
Chase Lake NWR (ND) 100%
Tamarac NWR (MN) 99.9 %
Sacramento NWR (CA) 99.6%
Bosque del APache NWR (NM) 99.2%
Pea Island (NC) 99.2%
Quivira NWR (KS) 99.1%
Muscatatuck (IN) 98.9%
Brazoria NWR (TX) 96.0%
Santa Ana (TX) 94.9%
Ridgefield NWR (WA) 89.4%
Laguna Atascosa NWR (TX) 86.1
Anahuac NWR (TX) 87.3%
Ottawa NWR (OH) 86.0%
Humboldt NWR (CA) 81.2%
Chincoteague (VA) 69.9%
Fisherman's Island 43.5%
Aransas NWR (TX) 42.9%
Columbia NWR (WA) 39.6%
Bear River NWR (UT) 36.6%
Eastern Shore (VA) 36.2%

As you might guess, a bunch more NWRs had smaller percentages.

I wonder: How many festival attendees will carry a valid Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation [Duck] Stamp? The way I look at it, it's a debt left unpaid.

Details about the annual Migratory Bird/Duck Stamp, and a new T-shirt that is available, are here: http://www.friendsofthestamp.org/ .

Happy New Year!
