Regards, ABSTRACT Analyses of hydrocarbons extracted from the drilling mud are one of the most important techniques used in formation evaluation while drilling. Equipment and techniques used so far has had moderate levels of success in gas extraction, interpretation of the data and finally the study of the reservoirs. Uncertainties in data acquired and interpretation has always restricted the reliability of the gas data for fully evaluating the formation. Gas data was interpreted using conventional interpretation methods using Pixler and/or Geoservices diagrams for wetness, balance and character and also using normalization of gas values. Fairly good success has also been achieved using the "Gas while drilling" (GWDTM) techniques used by TotalFinaElf. Enhanced extraction and detection of gas while drilling combined with efficient quality control of data is needed to have the best interpretation for early formation evaluation. This has led to the development of a completely new kind of gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer able to work at rig site. This new system includes a new heated gas extractor a new transport line and a new compact analyzer situated in the mud-logging unit. The heated gas extractor provides significantly better extraction from drilling mud, especially in cold muds in deep water drilling environments. The new gas chain is able to continuously analyze gas and hydrocarbon vapors from C1 to the heavier hydrocarbons C6 to C8, the light aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylenes), and the non-hydrocarbon or sour gases such as He, H2, Acetic Acid, CO2 and H2S by mass spectrometry even in severe conditions. INFACT TM Interpretation Facies Techniques INFACTTM software is an interpretation tool part of the FLAIRTM service. Gas data acquired from the FLAIR GC-MS detector are used via this software to do formation evaluation in real time. INFACTTM is a powerful tool, which has the capability of differentiating reservoir fluids, its geo-chemical analyses and origins etc. Specific studies for a particular structure can be done to identify zones of interest, hydrocarbon water contact locations and multi-well correlation to compare fluids in the same horizons for different wells. Additional geological and geo-chemical inputs allow comprehensive study of the reservoir and fluid conditions in quasi-real-time thus enabling early formation evaluation. The presentation will showcase the features of the FLAIRTM equipment and services as well as the features of INFACTTM software services, its importance in geological context and assistance in formation evaluation. Case studies and examples will also be included to demonstrate the methodology and compare with wireline log interpretation. BIOGRAPHY Isaac Easow has 12 years experience in the Oil industry and has been working in various positions in Mud Logging & related jobs in different parts of the world. He has taken a keen interest in Gas interpretation and formation pressure evaluation while drilling. While working for various Oil companies around the world, he has experienced a variety of geological and drilling conditions, which has enabled him to assess the formation and reservoir conditions with the help of available Mud Logging tools and data. Currently working in Indonesia as FLAIRTM engineer within Geoservices, using INFACTTM software to help clients in formation evaluation. Among the successful jobs done in Indonesia include the gas data interpretation and analyses done for Unocal Indonesia in their West Seno development project.
