"Ultra-deepwater exploration has generated a lot of interest among global companies, and Petronas is looking at inviting multinationals to start exploration in this area," Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) president Tan Sri Hassan Marican said. The national oil corporation was in the process of dividing each block into several concessions, he added. Ultra-deepwater refers to exploration in water depths of over 1,000m. Hassan was speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the 9th Oil and Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. It is understood that Malaysia currently produces 700,000 barrels of crude oil a day and is expected to boost production to at least 800,000 in in the next few years. Hassan said most of the oil wells located in waters less than 1,000m in depth had been contracted out under several PSCs signed earlier. "The new contracts may require companies to explore in areas with water depth of at least 2,000m," he added. He said Malaysian companies would also be invited to participate in the new initiatives. Meanwhile, he said Malaysia was not keen to set up its own stockpile of crude oil or join any group for such a purpose despite concerns over depleting oil reserves in the region, Malaysia was a producer country and its oil reserves were in its oil reservoirs, he said. He said as Malaysia was a net exporter of oil, it could use the margin available to draw the reserves from its production facilities. In addition, the high cost of setting up a stockpile infrastructure would be a major factor to consider. Hassan was asked to comment on remarks by ChevronTexaco chief executive David J. O'Reilly, who indicated that Asia could face a shortage of energy if the region did not collectively address the problem now. O'Reilly said Asian nations should put more effort into addressing the increased demand for energy in the region in view of the fast pace of economic growth over the last few years. "Something should be done to avoid the bottleneck," he said in his industry keynote address to the conference. Elaborating on Malaysia's energy plan, Hassan said the country was a member of the Asean Council of Petroleum (Ascope), which had the mandate to help members facing an energy crisis. Ascope had recently discussed the issue in Manila and decided to make further studies in view of the high cost of developing infrastructure to stock pile crude oil.
