The Continuous Wavelet Transform Seminar - ABSTRACT

Wavelet transform is a rapidly developing area in many disciplines including
geophysics. The CWT has become a hot subject of discussion among the
hydrocarbon explorationists lately. Pros and cons accumulate. But, have we
really figures out all the basics as well as the more advance details?

In the wavelet transform, a signal is represented by terms of a wavelet
expansion that uses coefficients in a linier combination of the wavelet
functions. The wavelet transform can not only provide insight on the combined
temporal and spectral characteristics of signal, but it can also localize the
target information in the time-frequency domain simultaneously, and this
property can be advantageously used to extract information from a signal that
is not possible to unravel with conventional Fourier transform. The wavelet
transform distinguished itself from the short time Fourier transform for
time-frequency analysis in that it provides an extra dimension to visualize
and analyze a signal, that is represented by scale parameter.

Non-stationary properties of the seismic signal are usually caused by
dispersion, attenuation and other non-linier processes which vary with
frequency and time simultaneously. Non-stationary properties of a seismic
signal always related to reflection, refraction, coherent noise such as ground
roll. These characteristics can be identified in time-frequency space.
Wavelet transform has been used to analyze seismic signal in the form of
time-variant signal. The trace of seismic signal divided into many parts and
for each of it wavelet transform has been applied. According to the results of
wavelet transform, the whole of trace can be characterized. In the other
application, wavelet transform has been used successfully to attenuate ground
roll and the other coherent noise of seismic data.

While the long known Fourier transform decomposes seismic signal from sinus or
cosines waves to a different frequency, the wavelet transform decomposes
signal into dilated and translated wavelets. The transform provides flexible
time-frequency window that automatically narrowed when observing high
frequency phenomena and widens when observing low frequency environment.

Some CWT based instantaneous attributes are: instantaneous amplitude,
instantaneous frequency, time-frequency derivatives of instantaneous
amplitude, instantaneous bandwidth, instantaneous Q and the new concept of
singularity order. Some author claimed that recent application of the
technique show the CWT attribute could even be used as direct hydrocarbon
indicator. Thus, it is believed that, reservoir information could be extracted
from seismic data alone.

Has quantitative seismic interpretation advanced that much? WhatÂ’s the value
of well petrophysic information ? How to make better use of the CWT technique?
Come and join our half day seminar on the CWT.
