The spatial distribution of discovered hydrocarbons within Sumatra-Andaman-Myanmar belt suggest that the Andaman Basin should host substantial gas reserves. The distribution of hydrocarbon reserves in the area is interpreted (Longley, 1997) to be directly related to the distribution of source rock types within each basin. This is probably related to the region's tectonic evolution that controlled the deposition of source rock sequences. The Andaman Basin may be divided into two distinct tectonosedimentation zones. The north Andaman Basin is controlled by the Myanmar tectonic elements and the south Andaman Basin by the tectonic elements of Sunda shelf.
