Regarding the ThinkPad X220.

cat /proc/acpi/ibm/volume reports: level unsupported.

Other events such as thinklight and video report: level supported, but still 
tpb will not show any onscreen display (OSD).  I know that xosd is working on 
my system from a test program I ran.

[root@myhost ~]# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/volume
level:          unsupported
mute:           off

[root@myhost ~]# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/light
status:         off
commands:       on, off

[root@myhost ~]# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/video
status:         supported
lcd:            disabled
crt:            disabled
dvi:            disabled
auto:           disabled
commands:       lcd_enable, lcd_disable
commands:       crt_enable, crt_disable
commands:       dvi_enable, dvi_disable
commands:       auto_enable, auto_disable
commands:       video_switch, expand_toggle
