I've also been using SMB for some years. Also now under z/OS 1.6. A while
back I was forced to change the way I map a network drive. Not necessarily
due to maintenance, and (I swear!) only for ME. At least not for everyone
who uses it.

First off, I've never issued NET USE. Is that a DOS command? This (XP)
procedure works consistently in our shop.

- Click on the My Computer desktop icon
- Click on Tools
- Click on Map Network Drive
- Select an available drive letter
- Type (or select) the Folder name as defined to SMB
- Click on 'Connect using a different user name'
- Enter the z/OS userid (e.g. TSO id)
- Enter the SMB password defined via the 'smbpw' command (preferably NOT
the same as your z/OS password!)
- Click OK, which returns you to the Map Network Drive window
- Click Finish, which produces a display of the mapped folder contents
- On My Computer, you should now see the z/OS folder mapped as a PC drive.

I can't explain why you never got prompted before for userid and password;
I always have been. There is supposedly a way within DFS/SMB to relate the
remote network (PC) userid to the appropriate z/OS userid. I have NEVER
been able to make that work. But entering the userid as above works very
reliably. I use SMB more or less daily to provide a CSI inventory file to
ShopzSeries. No intermediate platform is required.
