I'm using DFDSS+HSM+RMM from IBM but I know that Innovation equivalent
products (FDR and FDRABR) are better - performance wise that HSM,
particulary at dataset level (this information is for the performance data
published by Innovation).

Sometime ago I asked if FDRABR can work in plex mode (ala HSM) where you
can have Master Address Space and Promote Address Space and one will take
over the other if there is a failure. I didn't receive any answer but I
want to know if this is possible. Actually you can have several HSM dump
tasks per dump class beside the master HSM address space.

For us, the High Availability issue is becoming more important that
performance, in particulary for backup process.

How FDR and companion products are implemented in plex mode?. Probably
Bruce Black (DASD and I/O professor) can comment about this.

Thanks, Giovanni, I'll put on my professor hat <gr>

The big difference between FDRABR and HSM is that FDR does not have any sort of permanent address space like HSM does. HSM has a permanent started task (sometimes more than one) that handles requests. FDRABR is mostly executed as batch jobs (for backups and archiving) or as started tasks which end when they complete what they are doing. So there is no sysplex complications or recovery. I don't know who you spoke to, but they may have been confused because ABR has no such concept and they may not have been familiar with how HSM works.

Auto-recalls of archived (migrated) datasets are often executed as automatically initiated started tasks, but they just restore the requested datasets and terminate.
Because of this we think that ABR is easier to setup and administer.

BTW, since I am involved in many of the benchmarks we do, I can testify that Innovation goes out of its way to run fair, unbiased benchmarks with real-world data, to the best of our ability.
