Based on the truly ghastly web sites[1] that seem to be endemic, I
would urge a fair amount of material similar to that of Tufte on what
not to do, e.g., warn against extraneous glitz and advocate
simplicity, performance and user friendliness.
Yes. But this is not so much a design course but a mechanics
course. Still, there are places scattered throughout where
we discuss some of the dangers you mention.
Warn about data validation. Tell them not to validate user input,
e.g., addresses, names, unless they *FULLY* understand[2] the syntax.
Tell them that if they have restrictions on the formats[3] of, e.g.,
SSN, Telephone number, ZIP code, then they should spell them out.
Tell them about lint programs and services, especially the ones from
W3C.
[1] Take www.washingtonpost.com - please!
[2] It's dollars to donuts that they don't, but believe that they do.
That especially true for e-mail addresses, but I've also seen it
for names.
[3] Mandatory hyphens, parentheses or spaces, hyphens and prohibited
hyphens, parentheses or spaces, hyphens are the most common.
All good points. Thanks.
