We IPL weekly. We wouldn't have to, but I still think that if your
workload allows it, weekly or monthly IPLs are a good thing. Any minor
parmlib changes, software changes, etc. are easier to fix if done in small
doses instead of accumulating for 6 months or whatever. Also, the
operators don't forget how, as many have mentioned.

We used to IPL at 2:00 A.M. on Sunday morning. I'm not sure who or why we
picked that time, but someone suggested IPLing on Saturday evening, just
after shutting down all of the CICSs. That seemed to make a lot of sense.
The onlines were down for about 12 hours while batch was running. It also
made my coming in for the occasional upgrade a lot easier for me.

At the time we shut down now, almost everything is down anyway, and
shutting down the system and IPLing doesn't add that much more time. Also,
we do system pack backups right after IPLing. I don't bring up many of the
system tasks until after the pack backups, so the backups are much
cleaner. Things like TCPIP, NVAS, and DFHSM are all brought up after the
backups end using a set of commands that runs through AUTO. That also
means that no outside users can log on until the backups are done.

I really think what you do as a shop depends on your business needs. As a
manufacturer, our system being down for and extra 15 minutes to IPL doesn't
make much difference when most of the onlines are down for 12 hours
anyway. We do run into some problems with our Australian sites at times.
Also when we do year end closing, and they want to get as many parts
shipped before the end of the year as possible, we stay up. You really
have to do what works for your company.
