Is it possible, without encountering 'negative consequences', to IPL
z/OS 1.4 on a 2064-1C4 (using VM) without the z900 Bimodal or
Compatibility/Exploitation Features?

For a recent Disaster Recovery (DR) / Business Continuity Planning (BCP)
Test, we tried to IPL our z/OS 1.4 starter system using VM on a 2064-1C4
without first having the z900 Bimodal or Compatibility/Exploitation
Features APPLY'd. Our production system is an Amdahl 1015 (MP3000,
31-bit), and our intention was to IPL in ESA/390 mode.

Our LOADxx member contains an 'ARCHLVL 1' statement (ESA/390 mode).

IPL'ing our starter system, the following informational message
appeared:

IEA368I INVALID RECORD IN LOADWE . FIRST 17 BYTES ARE:
'ARCHLVL 1 '

This message suggests we had the PTF for APAR OW51521 APPLY'd (PTF
UW83388 SUP BY UW90737 ++IF FMID HBB7707 REQ UW90739);  PTF UW90739 was
indeed APPLY'd.

        And according to APAR OW51521:

And if you are running on a zSeries (e.g. z900):
ARCHLVL=2 should be specified or allowed to default. If
ARCHLVL=1 is specified, then you will receive the message:
IEA368I INVALID RECORD IN LOADxx. FIRST 17
BYTES ARE: 'ARCHLVL 1 '
The system ignores the incorrect record
and system initialization continues in z/Architecture mode.

The starter system IPL continued, however we had trouble accessing our
DASD.

Is it possible that this trouble accessing our DASD is related to the
lack of the z900 Bimodal or Compatibility/Exploitation Features on our
production system? Or would something else be the likely cause?

We were able to issue some MVS DISPLAY commands at the time of the event
that were captured in our JESLOG.

CHPID 18 (addresses 300-33F), 19 (addresses 340-37F), 1A (addresses
380-3BF), and 1B (addresses 3C0-3CF) are the CHPIDs for all of our
Amdahl Spectris DASD volumes.
