OK, how about SVC 99 interfaces, the REXX BPXWDYN service,
and the related Assembler callable services? Do all of them
use TMP under the covers? I would find that hard to beleive,
but not impossible.

Steve, I don't understand your comment. IDCAMS invokes TMP for ALLOCATE so it didn't have to re-invent all of the parsing and keyword processing. ALLOCATE was a late addition to IDCAMS (maybe 15 years ago??). I imagine this was a quick way for IBM to provide programatic allocation of non-VSAM datasets (non-JCL) with minimal effort. So why did you think this implied anything about other allocation services? In fact, ALLOCATE invokes SVC 99.

Well I was surprised to learn that IDCAMS
invoked TMP; just never thought about it
doing that; so I wondered if there were
other similar surprises out there. Maybe
I'm way wrong here, it just seemed that
using TMP was overkill for the task at
hand.

Kind regards,

-Steve
