Bill, I do believe the Zephon reports, but I do not agree that TCO methods used by them apply to most applications. Some applications and verticals yes: but not most.
Let's see an ISP run e-mail on MVS - just show me where to find something like Openwave and or Exchange for MVS, along with IXOS archiving software? Is anyone developing software for new applications like this on the MVS? Where is the utility billing software for MVS that compares with AMDOCS or LHS? I admit I have not looked at the Zephon reports for a long time, but I would love to see an vertical market analysis that includes the manpower efficiency pre-packaged software. Or how about an SAP comparison between mainframe and Unix. One other thing springs to mind about Unix sites. Unlike many MVS sites, I do not often see a huge amount of server power set aside for an army of programmers developing and maintaining application code. Either they are well hidden, or development requires far less man effort and MIPS than MVS. Ron PS I remain an MVS bigot - I just get exposed to large Unix sites enough to be a little worried about where they are catching up, caught up, and in some cases surpassed MVS and z/Series. > -----Original Message----- > From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On > Behalf Of William Ball > Sent: Thursday, 14 July 2005 11:00 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: Another - Another One Bites the Dust > > Ron, > > Obviously, I'm not going to change your mind or you mine. > > I'm guessing you don't believe the Xephon reports, that's up to you.
