Oh, you think that's bad? Currently, I install and maintain DB2, whose
holddata has always been prodigious. A reference to the PTF cover
letter is not what I call a packaging problem. What I call a packaging
problem is when PTF's that should be coreq'd are not. About a year ago,
I put on a HIPER PTF, and the DB2 COPY utility broke. IBM did not
believe it was their problem, so I spent many hours recreating it in
every possible way, and insisted that they fix it. They finally asked
for my load library, with which they were able to recreate the problem.
It turned out that the PTF that "broke" COPY addressed a problem in one
internal component of that utility, and to fix the breakage I needed to
apply an earlier (non-HIPER) PTF which addressed a corresponding
component of the COPY utility. I tried pointing out (with great vigor!)
that the later PTF should have co-req'd the earlier one, or should have
had a DEP hold, but they saw no problem with their packaging. That's
what I get for trying to keep up with HIPER's.

Been waiting a long time to get that one off my chest!

Cathy

Subject: SMP sloppiness

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that less care is being taken by IBM
with
packaging these days.

Due to various (mainly political) reasons, at one site I am in the
position
of having to apply a heap of maint - better than a years worth.
The holddata (for the 1.4 BCP) is significant. An unfortunate number of
which refer back to the PTF/APAR text to determine the applicability
and/or
actions.
Poor form - *VERY* poor form.
If I have to investigate several thousand PTFs, I certainly don't see
why I
should be bouncing back and forward to the PTS and/or IBMLink to find
what
should have been in the hold.

I've pissed on CA for this - IBM should have their people on a tighter
leash.

Anyone else noticed similar ???.
