The only version of the IBM Softcopy Librarian now available is for the Windows platform.
However, I have seen considerable discussion over the last couple of years in which a desire for a version for Linux has been mentioned. So far, I have observed no response out of IBM. Is there such a beastie? I would really prefer to have a z/OS based, or even Linux based version of this utility. Is there one? If not, how much trouble would I be in if I were to try to create one? I am running the Windows based one on my home system. But it uses my Linux based HTTP proxy (squid) because I don't let my Windows system out onto the Internet. I have reviewed my Squid logs and found the host name of the IBM server as well as the names of the control files. I have looked at the control files and they are simply text files with more variable information in them. It is fairly likely that even I could write a replacement program. Most likely in Perl, but maybe even in Java. Both Perl and Java are available for both the z/OS and Linux systems (Windows too, of course). I guess that it will depend on how irritated I get with Windows again. If you're wondering why I'm using my home system for this, it is because my work has a "packet shaper" which reduces my ftp speed to about 4Kb/s in order to conserve bandwidth for higher priority work. -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer UICI Insurance Center Information Technology ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
