Back in 1964, Falkoff, Iverson and Sussenguth published their paper "A
Formal Description of System/360" in the IBM Systems Journal. See:
http://researchweb.watson.ibm.com/journal/sj/032/falkoff.pdf
It used a variant of "Iverson notation" that was described in Ken
Iverson's 1962 book "A Programming Language". (Eventually Iverson
notation became APL.)
Whether you think APL is easier to read that the Principles book is a
matter of debate.
