In this case he's received no more information than the others who follow
IBM-MAIN and who made as good suggestions for the next stage of diagnosis
as I could make. There's too little information so far to diagnose the
problem - only to speculate. Looking at the first part of the data set
that made it through the various transcription steps has been suggested and
is likely to yield a "translated to ASCII and incompletely back" result
that means the copy is no longer a faithful representation of the dumped
environment.

IPCS doesn't say that as clearly as you and I might wish because we've
adhered to the design goal that everything be able to run in batch where no
friendly chats can take place. Dump initialization started off based on
the premise that RECFM=FBS,LRECL=4160 implied an unformatted dump, and,
after taking a look at a few records that disappointed, dump initialization
could have paused and said that, asking whether proceeding to initialize as
just an ordinary data set was wanted. What was done was to make the
assumption that making the dump viewable as an ordinary data set would be
useful. I hope that turns out to be the case. I'd also welcome suggested
message text that IPCS could put out in the batch initialization
environment saying what needs to be said effectively to an individual who
is usually a new or novice IPCS user. System test and level 2 support
folks with whom I deal daily don't have these problems nor do most of the
regulars on IBM-MAIN.
