I can't speak for Ed, but I wouldn't even consider it. I'm guessing he wouldn't either. I think it's great that Mary wants to learn about this stuff, so the best we can do is try to help her avoid the scars we all have. Your advice (try a non-authorized PC first) is good. Whoever else suggested reading Bob Shannon's share pitch was also on the money. The good news (Mary) is that once you've mastered the PC setup stuff you can do really wonderful stuff without raising a sweat.
