They aren't going away. They're becoming more numerous with each new
release of the operating system! That's what makes the "do not use"
edict so laughable. With z/OS 1.7, even JES2 is now delivering modules
in a PDSE via the SYS1.SHASLNKE data set! The times they are a-changin'...
Maybe so - however I doubt very much that any of such deliverables are
subject to concurrent update activity.
That's just the "problem du jour". Next time it will be directory
searching or performance or memory leak or [one of my favorites -
RMODE(24) programs being loaded into 31-bit storage -- remember that
one?? Turned out to be an RSM bug!]... Anything that circuitously
precipitates an outage will cause the very same people to say "Don't use
PDSE. They're unstable." Funny how they won't say don't use RSM when it
takes your system down or don't use JES when it takes your system down
or don't use TCPIP when it takes your system down or don't use IDCAMS
when it breaks your catalogs ... BTDTGTS with all of them.
Our shop runs on PDSE. Take it away and we lose everything ...
