when the TV show "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." first came out (1964?) - UNCLE
did not stand for anything (it may have been inteded to be an acronym, but
no specific words had been assigned)- only after public clamour did some
marketing genius come up with "United Network Command for Law and
Enforcement".

All through the life of the show the bad guys were just THRUSH (with no expansion of the name). It was only when the Spin-Off books were written that the name was revealed (In I think "The Dagger Affair") to be an acronym for "Technical Hierarchy for the Removal of Unneeded Surplus Humanity" AKA "The Hierarchy"). As an interesting sidelight, THRUSH was supposed to be an outgrowth of an "Unnamed 1890's English Criminal Organization" (it reorganized when it's founder "had an accident in Switzerland" [Per both the "Dagger Affair" and its sequel the "Rainbow Affair"]).
