If you specify DSN=DOES.NOT.EXIST the catalog will be queried to find the volser. If no catalog entry is found, JCL error. However, you specify DSN=DOES.NOT.EXIST,VOL=SER=VOLXXX and VOLXXX is online, it will work.

What is special about this? I've always received JCL errors when specifying DISP=OLD with a non-existant DSN. And, I started in this business as a JCL jockey (Production Support) in February 1981.
