In this context, a "subsystem" is an LCU in a DASD box. The subsystem numbers used by a DASD box are defined by the support CE when the box is installed. You can see the subsystem numbers for all your DASD boxes at IPL time, in a series of messages that looks like this:
IEC336I STORAGE SUBSYSTEM X'3100' INITIALIZED To avoid duplicates, my convention is to always tell the CE to use the LCU ID as the subsystem number.
