IBM has announced that VSAM clusters with IMBED will no longer be usable in
the next release after 1.7, call it 'R8'. We've run the supplied utility to
ferret out any IMBEDs that remain after all this time and found--much to
our chagrin--that we have a lot of catalogs with that attribute. Including
master catalogs! Must all of these be recreated? If so, we're looking at
some serious sysplex-wide outages.
Don't panic yet! We announced that IMBED, REPLICATE, and
KEYRANGE support would be withdrawn in a future release, but have
not yet announced which one. The exact text follows below.
Catalogs are where most people are discovering that these
attributes still exist because most other data sets get
unloaded/deleted/redefined/reloaded from time to time, and on any
supporte release of z/OS these attributes are ignored on the
DEFINE command. And yes, I'm afraid data sets and catalogs with
these attributes must be recreated to get rid of these attributes.
Announcement text:
As previously announced, support for this function is planned to
be withdrawn in a future release:
Support for the VSAM IMBED, REPLICATE, and KEYRANGE attributes
will be withdrawn. No supported release of z/OS allows you to
define new VSAM data sets with these attributes. Using them for
existing data sets can waste DASD space and can often degrade
performance. When this support is withdrawn, you will not be able
to process data sets with these attributes.

withdrawals, visit
