I am getting ratios of 30:1 or better of small messages to large, and IIRC it is even higher when using GRS-Ring. So, ESCON CTCs do very well in a Basic Sysplex, where the majority of messages are GRS ENQ traffic.
If I had a FICON switch in my environment, I would use single FICON channels in bounce-back mode for CTCs, which works like a charm, but I can't see wasting two FICON channels to create a single CTC connection right now, I would have to waste 4 FICON channels just for CTCs, and I really can't spare the channels right now. I have over a hundred un-used ESCON channels in my current configuration, but that will change when I get a z10.
