(Leaving lurk mode.) I think a distiction needs to be made between "applying maintenance" and simply changing some things. Applying SMPE maintenance to a running system can be a very Bad Idea. (Not that I haven't ever done it.) Changing system parameters, load libraries, linklists, etc. is no big deal.
