Back a few years ago, our then-CIO had a "Windows only" conversion desire. UNISYS was going to supply the hardware. Some other company (forget which) was going to convert __all__ our application code (batch, CICS) in every language (HLASM, COBOL, EasyTrievePlus, REXX, etc) and JCL to something "functionally equivalent" and .NET compatible. UNISYS stated that the contract would be written in such a way that the machine delivered was guaranteed to cost less than our z890-A02 and be at least as powerful (batch would run as fast or faster, interactives would handle at least our current transaction rate or higher). I would guess that could be considered a "mainframe".
What is a bit interesting is that we already had some UNISYS systems, and still do. The run much hotter than the z890 (now a z9BC) ever did. And, from what I've heard, are supposedly on the "replace with more efficient systems" list. Of course, they are older and technology does march on. -- John McKown Systems Engineer IV IT Administrative Services Group HealthMarkets(r) 9151 Boulevard 26 * N.
