Matt, AFAIR it is not a performance issue for the checkpoint sharing the volume with other datasets, but rather the long reserve that that JES2 uses can fire hose access to that volume from other systems.
In a busy shared spool it is still a good candidate for FlashAccess (SSD), usually on a CVS.
