The real reason the mainframe will never go away is that the people in charge of killing it are buzzword chirping bird-brains, who have never touched a line of code on any platform... Let alone having ever logged into the one they want to kill.
Quite honestly, I think getting rid of a Mainframe has more to do with understanding the cultural aspects of a technology change, than the apples-to-apples technology swap. Seemingly, the Starbucks Methodology of .mpp and .ppt files and the cheap Indian labor "secret sauce" is always the prevailing approach, leaving seemingly endless destruction in its wake.
