Hi:
I just recently set up the I/O configuration for a SL8500 ATL, although
we were using STK 9840C tape drives, operating in 3590 compatibility
mode. We are ESCON attached rather than FICON, but required HCD
definition had to see each tape drive as existing on its own control unit.
I can't say how much difference might exist, considering STK 10000
drives vs. STK 9840 drives and ESCON vs. FICON, but it was necessary to
define each tape drive with its own CU. It does not appear that the
SL8500 has a singular CU, but that each "bay" (containing a tape drive)
is a "control unit" by itself. Using that single drive per CU
configuration is working fine for us.
If you think it will help, I'll pull up my HCD definitions and send them
to you.

According to my understanding, we need a CUADD for every controller on the

I'm not sure what a "SL8500 ATL with STK 10000 drives" is but your
comments seem to indicate that each CU is a tape drive? Is each STK 1000
drive a contol unit and do you have the same CHP going to all of the CUs?
If in fact each tape drive is a separate CU and you have the same CHP
going to the various CUs, then what you have should work. BUT your
symptoms, ie only 600 comes online, seems to indicate that is not the
case. Sounds like you have multiple drive off the same controller, not
multiple controllers. I know with the IBM 3592, I had two controllers with
six drive and had to CUADR the second controller. It would help if you
could explain how many drive, CUs and CHPs are involved.
