we had done customer call on NLM in the 90s, NLM was sort of home-brew
CICS system from the 60s with BDAM ... a couple of the guys responsible
were still around and got to gosip about 60s (as undergraduate in the
60s, the univ had ONR grant to do computer catalog and was selected as
beta-test for original CICS, one of my tasks was debugging CICS).
misc. past posts mentioning cics &/or bdam

By the early 80s, NLM had reached point where web search engines got
nearly two decades later ... number of items so large that queries
returned hundreds of thousands items.

A new kind of interface originally done on Apple called GratefulMed
... that instead of getting back the actual responses, it got back the
number of responses. GratefulMed managed query strategies ... holy grail
was looking for something that returned more than zero and less than
hundred (boolean logic queries tended to be bimodel out around six or
seven tokens, switching from hundreds of thousands to zero).
