Would a latch outperform a lock?
My thought to use PLO is that it is direct hardware serialization.

As far as the codepath length for latch vs. lock, I don't have a clue.
Someone from IBM would have to comment on that. The nice thing with latches,
as far as I am concerned, is that you can define what latches are needed...you
can define the granularity of the serialization. I suspect that either PLO or
CS is eventually used in latch processing, but don't know that for a fact.
Maybe Jim Mulder or Peter Relson will chime in on this.
