Paul, I was surprised. I thought the type of space (TRK, CYL, etc.) was required. I just tried allocating a dataset using SPACE=(1,1), and it does allocate 1 track. However, personally I still prefer putting "TRK" in the SPACE parameter. It's called documentation, and there are probably others, notably application programmers, who don't realize that SPACE=(1,1) will allocate 1 track.
