The "main frame" literally used to be a
frame with things in it.

"used to be" is the operative phrase. Our language carries a lot of baggage in terms that made sense once but now have other meanings that no longer match the words. We all "dial' the phone but most dial phones are now in museums and landfills. How many of us computer types still call it "core"? History can be interesting (and I like rehasing it as much as anyone) but it is today's usage that is relevant.
