I would have thought Jim has already answered this.
Things are rarely as simple as they appear from the outside. Even in the
(home) PC world, it ain't that easy. Both that other near-monopoly,
proprietary, closed-source company and the open-source community have
made non-compatible changes that broke the bootloader in the recent
past.
