IBM just announced the DS8800 which uses 2.5 inch drives and is more economical on multiple fronts.
But it's also well worth mentioning that, for a particular end-user-delivered service, on average you'll use considerably fewer gigabytes/terabytes for a z/OS-based solution than for something else. A big reason for that is hardware compression (but not the only reason). How many fewer? It depends, but "considerably."
