IBM just announced the DS8800 which uses 2.5 inch drives and is more
economical on multiple fronts.

But it's also well worth mentioning that, for a particular
end-user-delivered service, on average you'll use considerably fewer
gigabytes/terabytes for a z/OS-based solution than for something else. A
big reason for that is hardware compression (but not the only reason). How
many fewer? It depends, but "considerably." So, like many other attributes
of mainframe computing, the math is important.
